05/07/2025: An Occupational Safety and Health Approach to Injuries Caused By Student Behaviors

An Occupational Safety and Health Approach to Injuries Caused By Student Behaviors

About the webinar:

In this webinar we will use occupational and safety health principles on how to improve conditions and reduce the risk of injuries to look at the problem of injuries caused by student behaviors affecting paraeducators, special education teachers and other affected staff. We will also have an expert available to answer questions around managing incidents.

This presentation by LOHP in collaboration with COEH is based on  the School Action for Safety and Health (SASH) administered by the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation in the California Department of Industrial Relations through an interagency agreement with the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California, Berkeley.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the risk of injuries from student behaviors to paraeducators while avoiding stigmatizing students.
  • Describe factors that increase the risk of injury for paraeducators.

  • Identify ways to prevent injuries caused by student behaviors and strategies to reduce the risk of harmful behaviors at multiple levels by addressing underlying causes.

  • Identify an action to take individually or collectively to advocate for conditions that reduce the risk of injuries caused by student behaviors.
